NOTE FROM THE CHAIRMAN
HOLLIN APPOINTED TO
PCPID COMMITTEE

Dear Friends:
I am so glad to be in touch with all of you
once again! I’m happy to fill you in on how
your support for CFXF has translated into
action lately.
A look back at 2006 reveals just how busy we’ve been! In
August, CFXF and Scripps Florida launched the joint
Fragile X Research Project in the Neuroscience Discovery
Lab of Dr. Claes Wahlestedt. In 2006, CFXF sponsored
three travel grants and one short term fellowship.
Charlotte D’Hulst from Belgium attended the NFXF
Conference in Atlanta in July, Anita Bhattycharyya from
the University of Wisconsin at Madison attended the
Neuroscience Conference, in Atlanta in October, and
Marta Rajkiewicz from Poland attended Congress 2006, in
Theux Belgium in May, all with support from CFXF. And,
Dr. Laetitia Davidovic of Canada recently undertook a
short-term fellowship in the lab of Dr. Barbara Bardoni in
Nice, France with CFXF’s help
In September, I was sworn in as a member of the
President’s Committee for Persons with Intellectual
Disabilities. At this first meeting the committee created a
new subcommittee, which I now chair, called the Research
Application Subcommittee. In this capacity, I am now
positioned to give fragile X a strong voice on the national
stage, and to focus attention on the translation of
laboratory findings into treatments and interventions in a
timely and effective way.
And, in response to a need we hear time and again, CFXF
and Scripps Florida are working together to institute an
annual scientific meeting that will bring veteran and young
investigators together to share information in a structured
yet informal format.
So, you see, with your help we are able to make enormous
contributions to the fragile X community. Thank you
again for your support as we move into another season here
in South Florida.

On Thursday, September 14, 2006 Harris Hollin and
several other new members of the Presidents Committee
for Persons with Intellectual Disabilities were sworn in to
serve their term on the committee. Part of the
Department of Health and Human Service’s
Administration for Children and Families, the PCPID
takes up issues related to the role of federal resources,
programs and services in the lives of the intellectually
disabled. In this role, Harris will be very active in bringing
the issue of translational research; that is bringing basic
scientific findings and advances to clinical applications
where the journey to a cure or effective treatment begins.
We all wish him the best in his new appointment and
thank all those whose support has been and will continue
to be critical to his success on the PCPID.
